Position Summary
A Fiber Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing fiber optic cables used for high-speed data transmission, including tasks like cable preparation, splicing, termination, testing, troubleshooting network connectivity issues, and ensuring the proper functionality of fiber optic systems in both residential and commercial settings, often working outdoors and utilizing specialized equipment to perform installations and repairs. Must be available to work weekends, holidays, evenings and overtime, as needed. The candidate must be willing to work 12+ hours per day as needed.


Key Responsibilities
  • Work with customers and leaders in a professional manner to plan and complete installation and repair of a variety of fiber products and services. Install, repair and test fiber cable in a variety of environments (underground, aerial, indoor, etc.)
  • Terminate cable utilizing a variety of connectors. Preparing fiber tails, mid-sheath, and fiber tray organization. Preparing closure (tap, B/D closure, and OFDC, etc.)
  • Perform testing utilizing OTDRs, IOLM, Power Meter/Light Sources and VFLs. Record and document testing per customer specifications. Chromatic Dispersion and PMD testing experience a plus
  • Troubleshoot fiber networks. Outage management
  • Perform daily duties in compliance with all Cable East (and represented customers), local, state, and federal safety guidelines.
  • Complete daily truck and equipment inspections. Clean and re-stock truck and trailer
  • Participate in on-call rotation for emergency support during outages
  • Always maintain a professional working attitude with co-workers and customers
  • Further industry knowledge on an ongoing basis

Required Knowledge/Skills
  • Able to read prints and other engineering documentation. Reading fiber design maps (portal) and fiber matrix
  • Mechanical and fusion splicing experience
  • Demonstrate understanding of fiber counts and colors
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy with MS Office products and testing equipment
  • Fiber Optic industry construction, maintenance and testing experience
  • Mechanically inclined, able to use a variety of tools and test equipment. Must be detail oriented. Able to think analytically and apply sound judgment, solve problems & make effective decisions
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to pass drug, background, DOT & MVR screenings
  • Must possess clean driving record, and demonstrate a commitment to all safe driving practices, traffic laws and company policies. 
  • Driver is ultimately responsible for the safe operation of a bucket truck and any trailer it may be towing, including ensuring proper maintenance, adhering to safety protocols, and making sound decisions regarding hazardous conditions.

  • Reaching: Using arms and hands to reach. Repetitive motion
  • Lifting: Lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying up to 70 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • Physical activity: Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling. Enter and exit bucket, truck, and trailer. Ascend and descend ladders as part of work duties. Repetitive motion 
  • Vision: Having close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Stamina: Performing manual (sometimes heavy) tasks for extended periods of time
  • Fiber Technicians may also work in various weather conditions, at heights, or in confined spaces. They may also be exposed to dust, temperature fluctuations, and high noise levels
