Description
The position of Fiber Optic Trainer is a regular full-time, hourly individual contributor role that is responsible for developing capable, confident fiber technicians by leading Cable East’s internal fiber training efforts. This role delivers hands-on instruction, classroom learning, and field-based coaching to ensure employees perform work safely, consistently, and to required quality standards. The Fiber Optic Trainer supports technician development from onboarding through ongoing evaluations, including early-tenure check-ins and periodic skill reviews. This position works out of the Statham, Georgia office and reports directly to the Fiber Specialist.
This position works a schedule of 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position will have intermittent travel around the metro Atlanta area to conduct field-based training at various job sites. As a condition of employment, this position may be required to work extended hours including evenings, weekends and holidays as operational business needs require along with overnight travel to other job sites.
 
Responsibilities
Instruction & Coaching:
  • Lead all internal fiber training activities for the department, including onboarding instruction, refresher sessions, and advanced skill development.
  • Provide hands-on field coaching to technicians, reinforcing proper methods, workmanship standards, and safety expectations.
  • Deliver training in classroom, lab, and live job-site settings.
  • Support technician development during early employment milestones and ongoing performance evaluations.
Evaluation & Skill Development:
  • Observe and assess technician performance in the field to ensure readiness and consistency.
  • Identify skill gaps and recommend targeted coaching or additional training.
  • Provide direct, constructive feedback to technicians to support growth and accountability.
  • Partner with supervisors and managers to align training outcomes with operational needs.
Training Structure & Content:
  • Build and maintain standardized training materials, exercises, and evaluation criteria.
  • Help define clear expectations for workmanship, documentation, testing, and safety practices.
  • Update training content to reflect changes in tools, processes, customer requirements, and industry standards.
  • Contribute to the development of scalable training frameworks that can support future internal growth and potential external programs.
  • Build and maintain standardized training materials, exercises, and evaluation criteria.
  • Help define clear expectations for workmanship, documentation, testing, and safety practices.
  • Update training content to reflect changes in tools, processes, customer requirements, and industry standards.
  • Contribute to the development of scalable training frameworks that can support future internal growth and potential external programs.
Technical Proficiency & Product Leadership:
  • Build and maintain standardized training materials, exercises, and evaluation criteria.
  • Help define clear expectations for workmanship, documentation, testing, and safety practices.
  • Update training content to reflect changes in tools, processes, customer requirements, and industry standards.
  • Contribute to the development of scalable training frameworks that can support future internal growth and potential external programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements
Formal Education & Certification:
  • Completion of a High School Diploma or attainment of a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D).
  • Valid Class C License (CDL) license with no restrictions and a clean driving record.
Knowledge & Experience:
  • 5+ years of experience performing fiber installation, splicing, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of fiber construction standards, documentation, and testing requirements.
  • Proficiency with OTDR, IOLM, Power Meter/Light Sources, VFL, and related equipment.
  • Experience with Ribbon splicing and Ribbonizing is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, or train others in a field or technical environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and digital reporting tools.
  • Experience in CD,PMD, and Fiber Characterization testing is a plus.
Qualifications & Characteristics:
  • Applicants must be able to wear personal protective equipment (“PPE”) when on job sites or other locations as directed.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials up to 50 pounds without an accommodation.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and work in warehouse, yard and outdoors jobsites for up to a 12-hour shift.
  • Ability to climb ladders, telephone poles and work at heights when providing directed training.
  • Approachable and patient, with the ability to teach without intimidation.
  • Comfortable leading instruction in both structured and hands-on settings in a fast-moving operational environment.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with a commitment to safety & quality.
  • Respected technical resource with a calm, professional presence.
  • Motivated by developing people and raising overall performance standards.
Work Environment:
  • Ability to work outdoors with exposure to outdoor conditions, heights, confined spaces, and active equipment under varied weather conditions that include humidity & seasonal temperature changes.
